STEER INTO STEM
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) and the Wendell Scott Foundation, 501 3 C organizations, have established a partnership to enhance the awareness of STEM opportunities in youth ages 13-17 through hands on activities, projects and tours to stimulate the mind and get them excited about learning.
With 34% of children living in poverty and 50% of the population being African American, the city of Danville is socioeconomically and racially diverse. This diversity will be represented in our program. However, two-thirds of African Americans who pursue STEM fields in college drop out before acquiring their credentials. Steer into STEM will offer the guidance and insight to parents and students to help encourage successful completion of these courses and meeting goals.
The Steer into STEM program will culminate in a semi-formal celebratory and presentation dinner on May 2015. Participants will learn that when one strives for excellence and remains persistent, obstacles can be removed to achieve success. Your monetary contribution would assist in purchasing outfits for the celebratory event, and will exemplify that the community cares about their situations and actions are being initiated to develop mechanisms to enhance learning and attract new industries to the community. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated.
