UNDERSTANDING BUSINESS IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT
A China Case Study 

Since economic reforms began in the late 1970's, China's economy has picked up steam in growth rate, size and complexity, resulting in a greater regional and global relevance. Since this period, Danville has also engaged in its own transformation, adopting a new approach to enhance its economic relevance in the global economy. As such, Danville is outward facing and continues to welcome investors from across the world. With new opportunities, come new responsibilities, including understanding business in an international context. Spend an afternoon discussing a China case study, not only to understand how to achieve success with Chinese counterparts, but also to extrapolate guiding principles for understanding business in an international context.
  
This case study will track an American business enterprise entering the Chinese market in order to find a Chinese commercial counterpart. While identifying reliable resources and key steps for this journey, the case study will deliver a core focus on successfully entering an agreement with a Chinese counterpart, which includes a discussion of key legal and regulatory issues, cross-cultural communication concepts, and practical drafting issues.  


Presenter

Nestor Gounaris is managing partner of China Solutions, and has over 13 years' experience in China ranging from 1989 to the present day. Nestor has represented over 700 clients (including Canyon Ranch, KPMG, Silicon Valley Bank) of varied industries and nationalities on matters ranging from large scale investment projects to multimillion dollar cross-border trade disputes. He was an associate at O'Melveny & Myers and Simmons & Simmons in their respective Shanghai offices before founding China Solutions.

Nestor has taught Chinese business law at UVA Law School and UCLA Law School, and presented on the same topic at Harvard Law School, Georgetown University School of Business, and University of Washington Foster School of Business.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked on Sino-focused projects at the National Committee on

US-China Relations, the Committee for Scholarly Communications with China, the Council on

Foreign Relations, the Henry Luce Foundation, and the Academy of Education Development.

Nestor attended University of Virginia Law School and the Georgetown's School of Foreign

Service.
