May 12    DRF Speaker Series 2016 "Listening to Create Change"

Danville Regional Foundation
and the
Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce
present

Reverend Jeffrey Brown
Founder of the Boston TenPoint Coalition

The founder of the Boston TenPoint Coalition, an organization which works to reduce urban gang violence, he’s been credited as the reason for the “Boston miracle”: a 79% drop in the city’s violent crime rate. When it comes to improving issues of racism and violence in the United States, talk is important, but actions speak the loudest — and Rev. Brown has been actively improving the lives of countless young people for decades.

Rev. Brown is the president and manager of RECAP, a group which partners churches, governments, and police in a three-tiered effort to combat gang violence. A regular commentator for outlets like NPR, the Economist and the Huffington Post, he is one of the most articulate and trusted sources on gang issues in America, and how they intersect with race politics. A gifted and impassioned speaker, Rev. Brown will leave you thinking about the incredible power and role of the community: how a few people, working together, can accomplish massive, impressive change.

DRF began the Speaker Series in 2009 by bringing innovative thinkers to the Dan River Region as part of the Foundation’s work to transform the regional economy and create a prosperous and healthy culture benefiting all of the region’s citizens.  A result of the Speaker Series has been people developing more confidence in their community.  Attendees take the speakers’ messages home with them and share it with friends, family, and co-workers.  These messages of positive change are contagious and spread quickly throughout the community.
