Nov 4    Danville Regional Foundation Speaker Series 2015

Danville Regional Foundation
and the
Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce
present

Daniel H. Pink

Daniel H. Pink is the author of five provocative books about the changing world of work, including the long-running New York Times best seller, A Whole New Mind, and the #1 New York Times best seller, Drive.  His books have been translated into 33 languages. Currently, Pink hosts Crowd Control, a series on National Geographic Television that takes problems and creates solutions using unique design, technology and behavioral science principles.

For his visit to the Dan River Region, Dan will be speaking on DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, using 50 years of behavioral science to overturn the conventional wisdom about human motivation. Pink shows that carrot and stick motivators have been oversold and that high performance depends much more on the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things and to do better by ourselves and the world. Drive is a New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times bestseller—as well as a national best seller in
Japan and the United Kingdom.

Pink's articles on business and technology have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, The Sunday Telegraph, Fast Company and Wired.  He has provided analysis of business trends on
CNN, CNBC, ABC, NPR, and other networks in the U.S. and abroad. He also advises both Fortune 100 companies and startups on recruiting, innovation and work practices.

A free agent himself, he held his last real job in the White House, where he served from 1995 to 1997 as chief speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore. He also worked as an aide to U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich and in other positions in politics and government.

He received a B.A. from Northwestern University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.

Pink lives in Washington, DC, with his wife and their three children.

DRF began the Speaker Series in 2009 by bringing innovative thinkers to the Dan River Region as part of the Foundation’s work to transform the regional economy and create a prosperous and healthy culture benefiting all of the region’s citizens.  A result of the Speaker Series has been people developing more confidence in their community.  Attendees take the speakers’ messages home with them and share it with friends, family, and co-workers.  These messages of positive change are contagious and spread quickly throughout the community.

Nov 10    Give 'Em the Pickle Customer Service Workshop
Get ready to learn about customer service like you’ve never heard it discussed before!
In the Give ‘Em The Pickle training workshop you’ll be acquainted with Bob Farrell, who learned the importance of giving away pickles to keep his customers happy and coming back. In this training, we join Bob (via DVD) to learn that “Your business is not what you sell. It’s who you serve.”
During this training workshop we will focus on the four PICKLE Key Learning Points:
Service
Make serving others your #1 Priority. You work in a noble profession, be proud of what you do.
Attitude
Choose your Attitude. How you think about your customers, is how you will treat them.
Consistency
Set high standards, and stick to them. Customers return because they like what happened last time.
Teamwork
Look for ways to make each other look good. In the end, everything ends up in front of the customer!

So, fasten your seat belt and get ready for a rollicking ride through customer service territory.

Nov 19    Speed Networking 11/19/15
Not familiar with the concept of Speed Networking?  Consider this.  When was the last time you went to a networking event and had a conversation with 30 different people?  If you find that meeting NEW people at a traditional mixer is challenging, you won’t want to miss out on Speed Networking.

Due to the nature of the event we can accept no more than two people from the same company.

Speed Networking is based on the concepts of “speed dating”, which provides busy professionals an opportunity to meet many prospects for romance in a short amount of time.   Business to Business Speed Networking offers the same opportunity on a professional level.  Ideal participants for Speed Networking include professionals who are just starting their careers or are new to the community, networking novices, and professionals who find the traditional mixer format overwhelming, or intimidating.   Professional Speed Networking gives business people an opportunity to meet each other one-on-one in four-minute increments with the goal of maximum exposure and minimum time commitment.  The rapid, mini-interviews make communication easy by providing structure and focus.  And, because time is limited, participants don’t have to fear being tied to one or two people for the duration of the event.  They are guaranteed to make many contacts, increasing the odds of establishing the building blocks for solid professional relationships in their community.

Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a social hour (with a cash bar available) to reconnect, collect a business card or two and enjoy light refreshments. The event will be hosted by 2 Witches Winery and Brewery (209 Trade Street) in Danville.  There will be a $20 registration fee for Chamber members and a $25 registration fee for non-members.

Contact information of participants will be provided to all Chamber member attendees at no cost to allow for post-event follow up.

Seating is limited.  Registrations are limited to 30 and will be accepted on a first come—first served basis with no direct competitors admitted.  Full attendance is vital for the success of this event.  The registration fee will be charged for no-shows or cancellations occurring after November 16.
