About Us

The Arc of Southside is a local chapter of our nations’ largest community-based organization, representing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. It is The Arc’s mission to “promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes” and this local chapter does just that!

The Arc of Southside directly serves over 200 people and represents over 3000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Danville-Pittsylvania County area through advocacy, resource referral, and services that support people to live their lives as they define it and to promote their full inclusion in the community. Some of the services they provide include increasing independence at home, exploring interests and volunteer opportunities, assisting people to obtain and maintain competitive employment, and others. Advocacy efforts include meeting with legislators, attending budget hearings, or even speaking at congressional briefings on issues directly impacting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Southside works for a Movement dedicated to ensuring that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are valued members of society with equal opportunities to obtain and enjoy A Life Like Yours (ALLY).
